KHC Hiking Etiquette
Some KHC Hiking Etiquette Guidelines
- Conversations on the trail should be kept at a respectful conversational level/volume so that other members of the group do not have to hear the dialogue. A number of our members also like to listen for the sounds of nature while out hiking on the trails.
- Turn down the volume on your mobile device while out on group hikes.
- Group hikes should be scent-free since someone else may be right behind you on a single track trail.
- If taking a break, move off the trail a ways to allow others to pass by unobstructed.
- Hikers going downhill yield to those hiking uphill.
- When relieving yourself outdoors, be sure to do so 100 feet away from the trail and any water sources. Follow Leave No Trace principles.
- If hiking in a group, don’t take up the whole width of the trail; allow others to pass.
- Getting too far in front of the leader can lead to all sorts of problems for the whole group so wait or stay in touch with the leader on the trails.
