Newsletter – November 1st

Kamloops Hiking Club Posted on November 1, 2025 by D. SmithNovember 18, 2025

Kamloops Hiking Club hosted 14 events in October to Sun Peaks, the Lower Rose Trails, Enderby Cliffs, Batchelor Hills, Roche Lake backcountry, Kalamalka Lake, Kenna Cartwright Park, the Marble Range, Blind Bay Bluffs, Peterson Creek, Six Mile Hills, and Greenstone Mountain.    Our thanks to Ian and Liz, Sheila, Monika Doug, Matt, Sasha, Sam, Erika and Kevin.   With changeable weather ahead, hike leaders may choose to do short-notice postings of events, and all upcoming events are subject to weather and driving conditions.    We will continue with fall hiking for another month, then there will be days where spikes will be needed, and by winter we will be snowshoeing. KHC has 137 members.   Registration for membership is still open and … Continue reading →

Newsletter – Oct.1, 2025

Kamloops Hiking Club Posted on October 1, 2025 by D. SmithOctober 3, 2025

There were 10 KHC hiking events in September.    Darlene led explorations at Mahood Lake, Wells Gray Park, on Greenstone Mountain, and down to the slot canyons.   Sasha led after work hikes on Dufferin Ridge, the lower Dewdrop,  Peterson Creek and Valleyview.   Doug led hikes to Skoatl Point and the West Guardsmen.   Good weather helped to make great conditions for end-of-summer and fall hikes.   Looking ahead we have 6 hiking events planned so far, and it is likely that more will be added so watch for updates.

Please note that we have added most members to the website subscription service, which means an email will be sent when a newsletter is published each month.    Members can opt out of the service by click the unsubscribe link in the email.   Anyone who did not get added can go to the right sidebar and scroll down to the subscription widget.

Hikes will continue through fall.    Once the snow falls, we can still hike on trails, but it is often advisable to wear tractions devices (spikes) on the boots.    Various brands are available, but many seasoned hikers use microspikes for their effectiveness and durability.   Once there is more snowfall, snowshoeing season will start.

Backpacks and camps are done for the season, but there will be new ones posted over the winter for 2026.    A number of campsites require early bookings and a commitment is needed many months in advance.   New events will be posted to the website.

There was some discussion with Board members and hike leaders about how things are going for the Club.    The general consensus is that there enough events for the interest shown by the members.    A few new members continue to join the Club, but few events fill up, so it all appears to be sustainable at this time.

We hope to see you on the trails this fall.

Newsletter

  • KHC Newsletter – Mar. 1, 2026

As the end of winter approaches, KHC shifts to hiking the trails, first at lower elevations, and as each week goes by, to higher trails.    There are hundreds of routes to choose from (link), and hike leaders pick the ones they will lead for the current conditions for the dates chosen.    Members can also suggest other hikes (contact us).   In most weeks, 3 or more events are published, but we can do more if more members can help to lead a hike. Membership renewal started February 1st and many members have completed the process.    Since the membership year has now ended, unrenewed memberships will have user accounts changed to Past Member with no access to logging in, registering for events, nor commenting.    Past members can still renew by completing the waiver and paying the membership dues by e-transfer.   New memberships are being received each day and will continue through March and April.   We anticipate having between 120 and 150 members by May 1st.   The goal is to have the right number of members to match the spaces available on events. Welcome to all new members.    You will have received a welcome email and information about logging in to the website to book a spot on a hike.    All of the other information you may need can be found on a website page, so take the time to browse through the site (go to the Menu Bar at the top and hover your cursor on a title or tap with your finger on a mobile).   We look forward to hiking with you this upcoming year. Events are posted onto the website as each hike leader picks a date for an outing.    Going to the website on a regular basis will mean you have early access to spots on a hike.    Hike leaders limit the size of the group to make them more manageable, and the number varies for each leader and event.    We can usually add one more person to an event, though (contact the leader). A few events are listed as Draft Events, meaning they are planned in advance, but not yet finalized.    Click on the event for more information. Some of the key volunteer members who have taken on jobs/tasks for the Club will either be traveling abroad or dealing with health issues over the next few weeks.   There may be a few gaps, adjustments, or delays in support over the next period of time.   We wish safe travels and successful recovery to these KHC members. There will be a New Members Hike coming early in March.    It will be a local hike tailored to new members and there will people available to answer questions.   Members who have renewed can join the hike if there are spaces still open closer to the scheduled date.   Watch for the new event on the website. Our KHC AGM is scheduled for April 12 and all members are welcome to attend.    The business end of the event will be short.    The President’s Report and the Financial Report will be published to the website in advance, so the main focus will be the election of officers and any discussions or questions that arise.   There will be a draw for 2 free memberships for the following year for 2 persons who attend the AGM. The KHC year ahead will feature events each week, a few trips, and many days of hiking.    We are always looking for more leaders so if you can help, please contact us.   See you on the trails…
