Description
A marine expedition to North America’s largest non-motorized lake, in the northeast corner of Wells Gray Park
- meet early to convoy (transport your own boat) to Blue River
- drive up the Murtle Lake Road (a good forest service road) to the trailhead
- load boats onto canoe/kayak carts (you can rent them from the Blue River Campground) and pack gear to the lake
- portage 2.5 km to the lake
- secure carts, pay fees, load boats, then launch into the lagoon and paddle out into the lake
- paddle up the lake to a marine campground in either the west arm or the north arm (6 to 10 km, but it is windy, then a closer marine site).
- Set up camp – the marine campsites have tent pads, outhouses, fire pits, tables, bearproof containers, firewood and services weekly
- Paddle and hike each day – 3 nights?
- Paddle back, portage, load, and drive back on the last day
- dates are proposed and can be adjusted, especially of weather or forest fires dictate
- tentative for now, but if there is interest, it can be moved to a regular upcoming event
- suitable for canoes, kayaks, and SUPs (but this would be harder)
- all safety gear required and some method of storing cargo in boats is needed; an equipment list will be provided…
